My Game was deleted by bug, I think. I had been working on it for a year, what do I do now? I kept no back up files. ; ;

Oh no!

If your RPG file seems to be corrupted or disappears:

  • How did it happen? Did the file completely vanish after tried to play it or open or save it with Custom? What were you doing when you last edited it? The developers care VERY much to hear reports of RPG file damage, and can sometimes recover data from a corrupted file.
  • Did you accidentally open it twice in Custom, select Erase or Recover in the second copy, and then save with the first? If you selected Recover, your game should be saved as a .BAK file.
  • Is there a c_debug.txt file or a c_debug_archive.txt file (produced by Custom) with any error messages in it?

Possible unknown copies[edit]

Maybe you have a copy of your game somewhere that you aren't aware of?

  • Was it sent to the recycle bin?
  • Are there any .BAK files in the directory, or a working.tmp folder?
  • If game.exe ever crashed while playing the game, it probably failed to delete its temp files (consisting of the whole game). Go to your temporary folder ("C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Temp" under WinXP) and look for folders with ohrrpgce in the name. Do any have anything in them?
  • Might you have an old copy on a floppy or USB stick somewhere?
  • Did you ever email the game to yourself or anyone else?
  • If you slapped a password on it and uploaded it somewhere, this is trivial to remove
