Hróðvitnir (transliterated as Hrodvitnir), pronounced throw-da-vit-nish (listen; compare Mjöðvitnir) is the codename of the current OHRRPGCE stable release.

Hróðvitnir is Norse for "fame-wolf", another name for Fenrir or Fenrisúlfr, a giant wolf in Norse mythology that is a son of Loki and is bound with a magical rope by the gods because he is foretold to kill the god Odin during Ragnarök. Fenrisulf and his daughter Hati Hróðvitnisdottir (a female equivalent of the original mythological character Hati Hróðvitnisson) appear as major characters in the OHRRPGCE's official example game Vikings of Midgard, which was finally completed in late 2020 in the leadup to the hróðvitnir release. This release is named in honour of Vikings of Midgard and its author Fenrir-Lunaris. (Trivia: it was originally planned to name a release yggdrasil on the completion of Vikings of Midgard).

Hróðvitnir was much delayed, taking over 16 months. Major new features include:

  • global NPCs
  • new default gfx_sdl2 graphics backend based on SDL 2
  • rewritten gamepad support
  • 24-bit graphics mode (for better transparency)
  • full 64-bit support for Macs (macOS 10.15+)
  • very many bugfixes
