Ridiculous Games Contests

The Ridiculous Games Contest is the modern rebranding of the historical Terrible Game Contest. While the first one or two Terrible Games contests indeed focused on making terrible games, the actual focus of the contest quickly switched to other avenues. In particular the winner of the first TGC, Final Fantasi XXX, was hard to outdo in terribleness. Some contestants wanted the contest renamed to discourage bad entries.

2009 and earlier years[edit]

See Terrible Game Contests.

2010[edit]

Ran from Apr 1 - Apr 30.

Entries (by placing)[edit]

2012[edit]

Ran from Mar 28 - Apr 30, and had a complicated ruleset, whereby contestants could compete according to rules handed down by any of seven infamous OHR villians. Entries were scored in a complicated way which incorporated scores by both community members, and by three judges (Surlaw, Gizmog, and James) who rating games on theme and quality, as well as bonus points. This contest was also remarkable for the three games/movies Fenrir created to introduce the contest and present the results. Charbile's My Little Gahn built directly on top of the Rules .rpg file.

2019[edit]

Ran from March 1st to March 31st, with entries being submitted from March 24th to March 31st. In contrast to the previous contest, the rules were remarkably straightforward.

As per tradition, idontknow made a game announcing the start of the contest, but this time there was also a website!

2020[edit]

Officially ran from March 1st to March 31st, but everyone started before then. As fitting for the engine's 22nd anniversary, entrants were expected to adhere to the various limits the OHR had before 2000, as well as use a maximum of 4 maps. Actually using a DOS version of the engine was encouraged but not expected.

Entrants were also ranked by two metrics - how good they were, and how close they were to the average OHR game of the time.

2022[edit]

Ran from March 1st to April 15th with voting closed on April 30th. Contestants were tasked with making a homage game about another Slime Salad forum/discord personality of their choice. Members of the forums/discord could choose to opt in or out of having their likeness used for a game entry.

2023[edit]

The contest was officially held from January 7th until May 28th. As of 2024 it holds the record for the longest timeframe window for a Ridiculous Game Contest. Contestants were tasked with making a Slime Salad themed "demake" of a non-OHR game on the OHR platform. Don't Eat Soap by Bob the Hamster was used as an example of an OHR "demake" of Bubble Bobble. The grand prize for winning the contest was a pizza delivery to the residence of the winner. This was also the first Ridiculous Game Contest to have a recorded livestream special showcasing the entries at the end of the contest.

2024[edit]

The contest was officially held from January 22nd until April 7th with voting closed after April 21st. With 2024 being the year Steamboat Willie entered the public domain, contestants were tasked with making a game themed around one or more public domain characters. This was the first Ridiculous Game Contest where contestants were allowed to develop their game on any platform of their choice rather than exclusively the OHR. Steamboat'24 by Berry was the only game out of the six final entries that was not made using the OHR.

(*The results were revealed one by one via a guessing game on the SS discord before being added to the original contest post)
