System Requirements

This one does the job!

The system requirements for the OHRRPGCE are low, very low. It is neither hungry for memory nor hungry for processor cycles, nor demanding on your graphics card. It should run fine on even old crusty computers. The minimum CPU requirement for a typical RPG is approximately a 400MHz Pentium 2, and in the ballpark of 20-40MB of free memory, though some OHRRPGCE games (mainly those that aren't RPGs) may have far higher requirements. However, official x86 builds for all operating systems except the Win95 one require a SSE2 CPU (Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon 64 or better).

The OHRRPGCE is known to work on the following operating systems:

Known to work[edit]

  • Windows: there are two builds (variants) for download, which differ by which backends are used and which CPUs are supported:
    • The default (gfx_sdl2) builds support 32-bit and 64-bit Windows XP and later (XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10, 11). They require a SSE2 (Pentium 4 or later) CPU.
    • The Win95 builds support all 32-bit and 64-bit Windows releases including 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP.... They require a Pentium Pro or later. They lack a few features such gamepad button mappings and OGG loop points and are buggier and slower, but also smaller (can fit on a floppy!)
  • Mac: also two builds for download:
    • The default 64-bit Mac game & editor apps require macOS 10.9+ (hróðvitnir and older 64-bit apps supported macOS 10.7+, maybe 10.6). They are x86_64 but should work on ARM Macs
    • Older 32-bit Intel Macs (before roughly 2009) require using the alternative 32-bit Mac apps. They support macOS 10.4-10.14 on Intel Macs (10.4 is not tested. ARM and PowerPC Macs not supported).
  • Linux distributions since ~2010, x86, x86_64, ARM or ARM64 (Debian, Ubuntu, Redhat/Fedora, Slackware...)
  • Android 2.3+ (see also Specific android device testing)
  • FreeBSD (No binaries provided. See Compiling)
  • ReactOS (see this post)

Probably Working, but needs verification[edit]

  • Other BSDs
  • ARM (Apple Silicon) Macs

Not Supported[edit]

  • BeOS/Haiku
  • Android 2.2 or earlier. (Before fufluns, Android 1.6-2.2 were supported)
  • iOS
  • DOS (Support was dropped in 2006, and you can still download that version)
